New Delhi: Congress senior leader Jairam Ramesh has urged the National Green Tribunal (NGT) to immediately release the report of the high-level committee set up to review the environmental clearances for the Great Nicobar Island project.
In a post on the social media platform X, Congress senior leader Jairam Ramesh said: In the Lok Sabha, the Tribunals Reforms Bill, 2026 is set to come up for discussion. This will be an important bill that will determine the future of 16 quasi-judicial bodies in the country, including the National Green Tribunal.
Last year, in 2021, the Supreme Court struck down key provisions of the Tribunals Reforms Act. The central government is now compelled to bring in a new bill to implement the Supreme Court’s ruling that an independent National Tribunals Commission must be established to appoint tribunal chairpersons and members.
The Modi government, having failed in its attempt to justify its flawed policies, is now bowing to the Supreme Court order and bringing in these reforms. We believe that the Green Tribunal, which has been stripped of its autonomous powers, will regain its statutory authority through the new law.
As the first step, the report submitted to the Green Tribunal by the high-level committee set up to examine the environmental clearance for the Great Nicobar Island project, in a sealed cover on July 8, 2025, should be made public immediately. He said this.
