A smuggler from Bangladesh who tried to infiltrate across the border adjoining Tripura state was shot dead by the Border Security Force (BSF).
BSF personnel were on routine patrol along the border in the Ugaokoti district early on Sunday morning. At that time, members of a smuggling gang from the Bangladesh border tried to infiltrate into Indian territory.
Following this, the personnel warned them to turn back. However, they attempted to attack the personnel with weapons including knives. The personnel then opened fire in self-defense.
One of the smugglers was hit by a bullet and died. The others fled back across the Bangladesh border.
It was found that the deceased was named Tara Mia (24), and that he was from Moulvibazar district in Bangladesh.
The BSF said that after the postmortem, Mia’s body would be handed over to his family through the Bangladesh Border Guard.
