A major stir has been caused by an incident in Assam’s Nagaon district in which a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) officer opened fire on fellow personnel and then died by suicide. Two personnel were killed in the CRPF officer’s shooting. One person was injured.
Regarding this, Nagaon district Deputy Superintendent of Police Paramita Sarkar said:
The incident occurred at 7 a.m. on Tuesday at the CRPF 34th battalion camp in the Kattimari area. Police Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Pallani Premaparan, who was on security duty at the camp’s main gate, opened fire on fellow personnel with his gun. He then shot himself. Pallani Premaparan died on the spot.
In the shooting by him, Assistant Sub-Inspector Ramnawal Singh Yadav and Head Constable Vishnu Prasad Baghel died at the scene. Another Assistant Sub-Inspector, Mane Govind Shripul, was injured. He was immediately admitted to a nearby private hospital. Later, he was transferred to Guwahati Government Medical College Hospital.
An inquiry has been ordered into this incident. Nagaon District Superintendent of Police Partha Protim Das said, “ASI Prembaran, who is from Andhra Pradesh, did not take the weapon assigned to him; instead, he took an INSAS rifle from the arms storage room and attacked fellow personnel. He first opened fire on Head Constable Baghel, then attacked Assistant Sub-Inspector Yadav, who had come from Lucknow in Uttar Pradesh for document verification. After that, he fired at Sripul and then went to military quarters B/171 and shot himself dead. Police are investigating this incident,” he said.
