There is a government order stating that the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister’s photograph must be displayed in government offices. However, the issue of displaying the Chief Minister’s picture in the rooms of public representatives such as mayors, deputy mayors, municipal chairpersons, and town panchayat chairpersons, who hold positions as DMK public representatives, still continues.
After Joseph Vijay took charge as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, a government order was issued to display his photograph in government offices. Following this, members of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam continued their protest in front of the Nellai Municipal Corporation office.
They submitted a petition to Municipal Commissioner Monika Rana, demanding that the Chief Minister’s picture be placed in the rooms of the people’s representatives in the Nellai Municipal Corporation. Following multiple rounds of protest by the TVK members, the Chief Minister’s picture was placed in the municipal corporation office, including the Mayor’s and Deputy Mayor’s rooms.
Moreover, a picture of Chief Minister Joseph Vijay was hung between the pictures of former Chief Ministers M. Karunanidhi and M.K. Stalin. This action by the municipal commissioner left DMK mayor Ramakrishnan dissatisfied.
Chief Minister Vijay’s photograph was placed above Ramakrishnan’s seat, that is, above his head. Normally, Mayor Ramakrishnan would sit in that spot and attend to office work. But the mayor, unwilling to work while seated beneath Vijay’s photograph, did not sit in his usual chair.
Instead of using that space and seat for official work, he is attending to official duties while sitting on a sofa placed in another part of the same room.
A video of Mayor Ramakrishnan’s actions is going viral on the internet. Opinions are being expressed both in support of and in opposition to the mayor’s actions. Condemning the mayor’s conduct, lawyer Brahma, who is a member of the Congress party and the founder of the Rahul Gandhi Blood Donation Association, said, "It is customary for a mayor elected by the people to recognize and work with the current chief minister, who has taken office in accordance with the Constitution.
Showing personal political likes and dislikes in administration goes against democratic norms. If he truly has ideological conviction and party loyalty, let Mayor Ramakrishnan resign from his post and leave," he said sharply.
The issue of placing Chief Minister Vijay’s picture in various municipal corporations, municipalities, town panchayats, and other places where DMK public representatives hold office has continued until now. Therefore, TVK members say the government should take firm action in this matter.
TVK members also say that public representatives who violate the Constitution and the oath they took upon assuming office, in which they pledged to act without bias or prejudice, should be removed from office.
In this situation, when this issue was brought up and Nellai Mayor Ramakrishnan was asked about it, he said, "Some people are stirring up such issues for political gain. When the TVK members requested that the Chief Minister’s picture be displayed, we put up his picture in the corporation office.
Now they have placed it in the center of my room; I don’t like sitting there, so I am sitting a little away from it, that’s all," he concluded.
