NTA Director Abhishek Singh on Tuesday (June 16) explained the reason behind the ban on the Telegram app, which was imposed to properly conduct the NEET re-exam.
With the NEET re-exam scheduled to be held on June 21, the Union Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology this morning ordered a temporary ban on the Telegram app to prevent question paper leaks.
Speaking about this, Abhishek Singh said:
Some fraudsters and con artists have been sharing fake question papers as if they were genuine and deceiving people into paying for them. This strict action had to be taken because Telegram was being misused to create panic among students.
Therefore, we met with Telegram officials and asked them not to allow anyone to create any group claiming, “This is the leaked NEET question paper.” As a result, we had to block 200 groups. However, sometimes some people are deceived before action can be taken.
This is what happened during the exam on May 3 as well. We found that some Telegram channels were circulating a video showing that the actual question paper for May 3 had been shared as early as May 1.
There are reports of the Telegram app being misused for drugs, crypto, fake investment advice, and sexual assaults. These are now echoing in examinations as well, Abhishek Singh said.
