In Mayiladuthurai district, in the Koorainadu market street area, a liquor shop has been operating for more than nine years.
The Koorainadu area is a major part of the district, comprising various shops such as textile stores, wedding halls, schools, and everything from large wholesale businesses to small retail shops.
Because the liquor shop is located very close to the Koorainadu area bus stop, the public lives in great fear and also faces various disturbances from time to time.
When speaking to the local residents about this, they said, “We used to wait for the bus right next to this Tasmac. When this Tasmac wasn’t here, we would all wait there to board the bus.
Ever since this Tasmac came up, this bus stop has become a place for drunkards. We don’t even go to that side. We stand a little farther away there itself, waiting to board the bus, with our legs aching.”
No matter how long it takes for the bus to come, we have to keep standing there. People will come walking from nearby, drunk and staggering. Just seeing all that is really scary. All the buses stop a little farther away, right where we are standing.
After evening, people are afraid to stand here and board the bus. Because... at that time, a lot of people here stand around drunk, with bottles in their hands. By seven or eight at night, all the women working in the nearby shops finish work and come to catch the bus.
People who drink here at the bus stop tease and harass those children, and cause trouble while drunk. Because of that, instead of waiting until the bus arrives, they even leave by catching an auto. They create a lot of nuisance by drinking, blocking the road with their vehicles, and fighting with one another while intoxicated.
There is a hospital 50 meters from this TASMAC shop, and within 500 meters there is also a mosque, a school, and everything else. When the newly sworn-in Chief Minister Vijay government issued an announcement regarding these TASMAC shops, we felt a little relieved.
But, shockingly... they said this TASMAC shop was not on that list. As the government said, this shop is within 500 meters. Even so, I don’t know why it hasn’t been closed... The government should take immediate action to shut down this shop. They said the old situation should return, where people wait at the bus stop itself and catch the bus."
Speaking, social activist Upper Sundar from that area said, "One of the main market streets in Mayiladuthurai district is Koorainaadu. Due to the liquor shop, the people of that area have been facing major inconveniences.
Various accidents have been occurring in this area due to people staggering along under the influence of alcohol. More than five people have died in these accidents in just the past year. In particular, passengers waiting for buses are facing great hardship. The government should act swiftly, take department-related measures, and take appropriate steps to relocate the liquor shop from here," he demanded.
The only demand of the local residents is that the new government should act quickly and immediately shut down the liquor shop, which is causing severe inconvenience to the public.
