In the recently concluded Assembly election, TVK candidates did not win a single one of the 6 Assembly constituencies in Kanyakumari district. TVK finished third in the Kanyakumari constituency and second in the remaining 5 constituencies. At the same time, Congress won in all 3 constituencies it contested. Congress won the Killiyoor constituency by a margin of 1,311 votes. Following Congress joining the TVK alliance, Rajeshkumar, who contested and won from the Killiyoor constituency on behalf of Congress, has become the Tourism Minister. After becoming Tourism Minister, Rajeshkumar had met TVK West District Secretary Sabin as a courtesy. In this situation, Sabin, who contested on behalf of TVK, has submitted a petition to election officials demanding that a recount be conducted in the Killiyoor constituency and that a re-poll be held in some polling stations. `During the vote counting held on May 4 last month, there were major discrepancies in the counting of postal ballots. Although around 4,500 postal ballots were supposed to be counted, only 2,500 votes were counted and the results were announced. Even though a complaint was made to the election officer at the time, the assurance given that it would be corrected before the final result was not fulfilled.
Various technical glitches also occurred in the operation of the electronic voting machines (EVMs). In particular, the machine at polling station number 169 showed that voting began at 5:45 a.m. This has raised doubts about the machine’s reliability. Similarly, there were problems in verifying the votes recorded in the machine at polling station number 76. The 18th to 22nd rounds of vote counting were conducted without any transparency. Announcing multiple rounds together as a whole, instead of declaring the results of each round separately, is against election rules.
The election officials’ hasty announcement of results without properly addressing the legitimate objections raised by the candidate and his agents is anti-democratic. A re-poll should be conducted immediately at polling stations 76 and 169, where technical glitches occurred. The other machines and postal ballots should be recounted once again in a proper manner. To ensure the transparency and integrity of the electoral process, the Election Commission must intervene in this matter immediately."
