Kerala Legislative Assembly Opposition Leader Pinarayi Vijayan on Saturday accused the state government of acting "negligently" in handling the spread of the Nipah virus.
The Nipah virus fever is spreading rapidly in Kerala. On June 10, a 43-year-old man from Ramanattukara was admitted to Kozhikode Medical College with the fever, and tests confirmed that he was infected with the Nipah virus. Following this, precautionary measures have been intensified.
Speaking to reporters in this regard, Pinarayi Vijayan said,
The issue of the Nipah virus outbreak must be handled with utmost seriousness. I am not referring to the actions of the doctors.
The health department and the government should take the initiative to fully activate the healthcare system and ensure the necessary measures are in place. At present, no such preparations are visible.
The state’s previous health ministers were not medical graduates. However, in the past, when Kerala faced severe Nipah virus outbreaks, the government, including the health minister, responded in full readiness and with active involvement during the crisis.
Everyone knows what measures the government took in that situation. But now, a lethargic atmosphere is being seen. So far, the health minister has not come here or intervened directly.
