To collect empty liquor bottles from the alcoholic beverages sold at TASMAC liquor shops in Tamil Nadu, TASMAC has introduced, on a trial basis, an automated machine powered by artificial intelligence technology in Egmore.
The dumping of empty glass liquor bottles on roads, in public places, in hilly areas, and elsewhere has long been a problem concerning the environment and public safety.
In this situation, following the Madras High Court’s order to introduce a procedure for taking back empty liquor bottles, TASMAC implemented the ‘deposit return’ system.
Accordingly, an additional Rs. 10 is collected along with the fixed price when purchasing liquor. Later, when the empty liquor bottle is returned to the same shop, that Rs. 10 is refunded. However, it was said that this practice created additional workload for shop employees and caused difficulties in separately collecting and refunding the money. In addition, customers at many places had been continuously opposing the extra Rs. 10 charge.
As a result, employees’ unions had also been demanding that this scheme be modified. Following this, TASMAC has planned to use machines in a fully automated manner for collecting empty liquor bottles.
How the machine works: First, the user must scan the QR code of the UPI app on their mobile phone using the machine, or enter their mobile number. Then, the QR code pasted on the empty liquor bottle must be scanned by the machine. After that, the bottle should be placed in the opening on the machine. Once verification is complete, the Rs. 10 amount for that bottle will be directly credited to the user’s bank or UPI account.
An automatic machine will have the capacity to store around 3,000 empty liquor bottles. In this phase, they are being installed on a trial basis at a Tasmac shop near the Albert Theatre in Chennai Egmore, and their performance is being studied.
Tasmac officials also said that, on a trial basis, they will be installed in several liquor shops in various places, and if the operation is successful, this facility will be expanded to all Tasmac shops across the state.
