MDMK principal secretary Durai Vaiko’s remark yesterday that it was unfortunate that their candidates contested under the Rising Sun symbol in the recently concluded Assembly election has stirred up a buzz in Tamil Nadu’s political arena.
When Chief Minister Vijay went to thank the people of the Tiruchirappalli East constituency, Tiruchi MP Durai Vaiko, who welcomed him there, had spoken with visible disappointment about being unable to extend support to TVK.
Political analysts say Durai’s remarks indicate that MDMK is also preparing to move toward TVK. It is said that the party’s general council will soon meet and decide whether to continue in the DMK alliance or not.
Against this backdrop, we spoke to Mallai Sathya, who recently quit the party and launched a separate outfit called Dravidian Victory Kazhagam, about this sudden political stance of the MDMK.
“Vaiko has been a Member of Parliament for thirty years and three months. Of that, for twenty-nine years he was sent as a representative of the DMK. He proudly calls himself the Parliament Tiger and all that, but it was the DMK that gave him the opportunity that made that pride possible.
It was against brother Stalin that he formed the MDMK in the first place. But even after that, Stalin forgot all that bitterness and sent him to Delhi.
To top it off, they also secured the Tiruchy constituency for his son and made him an MP too. It was very hard for Thurai to get the Tiruchy seat. At that time, I was in the MDMK.
The Congress party’s Thirunavukkarasar had expected the constituency. Even so, because Vaiko was adamant and asked for it for his son, Stalin spoke directly to Rahul, who was at the INDIA alliance meeting in Mumbai, and got the constituency secured.
Is the loyalty you show to a party that has done so much for you what you call the word “misfortune”?
As far as Vaiko is concerned, getting hold of a mic and saying one thing while doing the exact opposite in real life is something he has long been used to. At no point in time was he ever truly loyal or honest to any of his associates.
At one time, when he was in the AIADMK alliance, Jayalalithaa had said they could go together to submit a letter of support to Delhi. He nodded along, saying okay, okay, but quietly went and submitted it separately on his own. That woman was furious with him then.
Vaiko has publicly said that he had sworn to Karunanidhi that he would support Stalin. I don’t know whether Durai knows about that or not.
So what happened to that oath now? This is nothing new for Vaiko. In fact, I can say for sure that while people across Tamil Nadu may have felt sad about Brother Stalin’s defeat in the Kolathur constituency, Vaiko would have been quietly pleased. That much bitterness is in his heart.
"Okay, now the rising sun symbol seems unlucky, right? If you’re going to ask your members who contested under that symbol to resign, then before that, Durai should resign from his MP post. He won only because of the votes he got thanks to the rising sun. Do that first, and then you can take whatever decision you want. In switching sides, if Vaiko jumps 8 feet, Durai proves he’ll jump 16 feet—that’s all," says Sathya.

இவ்வளவு செஞ்சிருக்கற கட்சிக்கு நீங்க காட்டுகிற விசுவாசம்தான் ‘துரதிர்ஷ்டம்’கிற வார்த்தையா?
வைகோவை பொறுத்தவரை மைக் கிடைச்சா ஒன்ணைப் பேசறதும் நிஜத்துல அதற்கு நேர் மாறா நடக்கிறதும் பழகிப் போன விஷயம். ஒரு காலத்துலயும் அவர் கூட்டாளிங்க யாருக்கும் உண்மையானவரா நேர்மையானவரா இருந்ததில்லை.

இப்ப அந்த சத்தியம் என்ன ஆச்சு? வைகோவுக்கு இது புதுசு இல்லீங்க. இன்னும் சொல்லப் போனா கொளத்தூர் தொகுதியில அண்ணன் ஸ்டாலின் தோல்வியடைஞ்சதுக்கு தமிழ்நாட்டுல யார் யாரெல்லாம் வருத்தப் பட்டாங்களோ தெரியாது, ஆனா வைகோ உள்ளூர மகிழ்ந்திருப்பார்னு என்னால உறுதியாச் சொல்ல முடியும். அவ்வளவு வன்மம் அவர் மனசுல இருக்கு.
