Announced as Vijay's last film, 'Jana Nayagan' was set to release during Pongal. However, the censor board refused to grant certification after watching the film and recommended a re-evaluation. Opposing this, the production company K.V.N. filed a case in the Chennai High Court. Justice P.D. Asha, who heard the case, ordered immediate certification and canceled the recommendation for re-evaluation. The censor board appealed against the single judge's order. In this context, a hearing was held on the 20th before the Chief Justice's bench. After hearing the arguments of the production company and the censor board, the court granted certification to the film.
The producers raised the question of how the release date can be announced before obtaining the certificate. Furthermore, they stated that it is unacceptable to complete all court procedures and obtain an order on the same day. In this case, with the verdict postponed without specifying a date, the Chennai High Court delivered the judgment today (Jan. 27). The court canceled the order issued by a separate judge to the censor board and directed that the censor certificate for the film "Jana Nayagan" be issued immediately.
The Chennai High Court Chief Justice has ordered a bench hearing. The bench comprising Chief Justice M.M. Srivastava and Justice G. Arulmurugan, which examined the appeal filed by the Censor Board against the single judge's order, has directed the case to be reconsidered by the single judge. The judges pointed out that there have been serious complaints that the film contains military insignia in a democratic context, scenes that could disrupt religious harmony, and portrayals suggesting foreign powers inciting unrest in the country. Due to these serious complaints, the Censor Board has issued an order to send the film for re-examination.
They stated that the order issued without granting an opportunity to file a reply petition is being canceled. Furthermore, the film company can amend the petition in the case to challenge the order sending the film for re-examination. The judges have also ordered that the censor board should be given an opportunity to respond to that petition and a separate judge's order should be issued.
