Koodalur: Cumbum TVK MLA Jaganath Mishra has said that the water level of the Mullaperiyar dam should be maintained at 133 feet and the surplus water should be stored in the tanks and dams on the Tamil Nadu side. This has come as a shock to farmers who have been fighting for years to raise the water level to 152 feet.

The water above that level can be released outside the Tamil Nadu region and stored in the Vaigai dam and in the tanks in the district. It was mentioned there that this would improve the water resources of five districts.
Farmers and the general public from five districts have been carrying out various ground protests and also pursuing legal action to raise the water level to 152 feet. In this situation, the MLA’s remarks have sparked strong opposition among the farmers of the five districts.
Regarding this, speaking to reporters at an event held in Kerala, Kerala Congress minister Mons Joseph said that the issue of raising the water level of the Mullaperiyar dam has been before the Supreme Court for many years.
This is a long-standing issue between the two states. However, he accused Jagannath Mishra of making a statement without a full understanding of the matter. Periyar Vaigai Irrigation Farmers Association coordinator Pennicuick Balasingam said that only the water above 104 feet can be used by Tamil Nadu.
In that way, we have been using only 7 TMC of water. As the MLA said, if the water level is maintained at 133 feet, we will have to lose 4.5 TMC of water.
The rule curve method is followed in maintaining the water level. Tamil Nadu can draw a maximum of only 2,600 cubic feet of water per second. Therefore, during the monsoon, for the sake of dam safety, less water can be stored, and in other seasons, more can be stored.
The MLA’s opinion on the dam’s water level, which is under the control of the National Dam Safety Authority, is not acceptable. Moreover, many have sacrificed their lives to raise the water level to 152 feet.
The Tamil Nadu government is also continuing legal battles. In this situation, the MLA’s statement, which appeared to suggest lowering the water level, has caused shock, he said.

நீர்மட்டத்தை நிலைநிறுத்துவதில் ரூல்கர்வ் முறை பின்பற்றப்படுகிறது. தமிழகத்துக்கு விநாடிக்கு 2,600 கனஅடி நீர்தான் அதிகபட்சமாக எடுக்க முடியும். எனவே பருவமழையின்போது அணை பாதுகாப்பு கருதி குறைவான நீரையும், மற்ற காலங்களில் கூடுதலாகவும் தேக்கவும் முடியும்.
தேசிய அணைகள் பாதுகாப்பு ஆணையத்தின் கட்டுப்பாட்டில் உள்ள அணையின் நீர்மட்டம் குறித்த எம்எல்ஏ கருத்து ஏற்புடையதல்ல. மேலும் 152 அடி வரை நீர்மட்டத்தை உயர்த்த பலரும் உயிர்த்தியாகம் செய்துள்ளனர்.
