The INDIA alliance’s consultative meeting concluded in Delhi today. Before this meeting took place, VCK leader Thirumavalavan had given an interview to a private news agency.
In that interview, “The approach adopted by the Congress party during the recent elections has caused dissatisfaction among many member parties of the ‘India’ alliance. Responding to Thirumavalavan’s criticism, Congress MP Manickam Tagore said, “The remarks made by the VCK leader are surprising. How can Congress’s efforts to strengthen its party in Kerala, West Bengal, and Tamil Nadu be an act that weakens the alliance? Every alliance partner has the right to grow its organization and vote base.
Only if Congress is strong will the INDIA alliance be strong. Likewise, the strength of the Trinamool Congress, the Marxist Party, and other alliance parties is also a strength for the alliance itself. The purpose of an alliance is not for one party to block the growth of another. It is for everyone to expand their political base and work together for common goals.
It is not right to portray Congress’s efforts to strengthen its identity and organization in Tamil Nadu as being against the alliance. There must be respect and mutual recognition within the alliance. The idea of weakening Congress will not strengthen the INDIA alliance; rather, it will only help the BJP. Moreover, this is an example of the democratic political culture followed by the Congress party.
You can participate in the INDIA alliance and criticize us; you can point out shortcomings in our functioning. Congress has the courage to hear such criticism and the maturity to face it democratically. That is why even the leaders of friendly parties within the alliance are able to openly criticize Congress.
However, whatever the differences of opinion may be, they will not weaken our struggle against communal and divisive forces. Congress will continue to fight for the larger goal of protecting democracy and secularism.
Congress’s growth is not a threat to the alliance; it is a necessity that will increase the alliance’s overall strength. At a time when forces that uphold democracy and secularism must work together, one should not view another’s growth as a threat, but as a strength of the alliance.
That is the right approach in the struggle to protect India’s diversity and the values of the Constitution," he has responded.
