In an effort to prevent Russia from obtaining funding for its war against Ukraine, Britain seized a Russian oil tanker on Sunday. Britain said this was the first time it had taken such action.
Britain has imposed sanctions on 600 Russian vessels that operate by concealing details such as the owner’s identity and where the cargo is being shipped from, in order to evade international sanctions and monitoring.
It is said that Russia has been operating such vessels to evade international sanctions imposed on its crude oil exports because of the war against Ukraine.
In this situation, the British-imposed ban will prevent those ships from entering the country’s ports, and will also stop British companies and individuals from providing financial, insurance, and brokerage services to ships transporting Russian crude oil.
In this context, British armed forces intercepted and stopped a sanctioned Russian oil tanker in the English Channel, adjacent to the Atlantic Ocean, early on Sunday morning.
The operation by British forces to intercept and seize the ship named ‘Smirdos’ lasted about 6 hours. This is the first time the British armed forces have been involved in such an operation. Following this, the ship will be held and monitored near Britain’s southern coastal area.
The ship has been seized with the aim of preventing Russia from obtaining funds to continue its war against Ukraine.
Regarding this, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said, ‘The operation carried out by seizing the Smirdos ship has dealt Russia another powerful blow. This action will also serve as a reminder that those who support Russia’s war against Ukraine cannot hide anywhere,’ according to a statement from the British Ministry of Defence.
