"Politics has surpassed the global economy" - Minister Jaishankar's 'Risk Code' speech
Amid the trade tensions between India and the United States, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar spoke about the global risks faced by economies in the current era. The Kolkata IIM honored External Affairs Minister Jaishankar with an honorary doctorate. Speaking at the event, Minister Jaishankar said, "The times we live in are ones where politics can surpass the economy. This is an uncertain world. This is not just a phrase... The United States, a long-standing guarantor of the contemporary trade system, is intensively establishing new engagement rules. Instead of treating each country under common rules, it achieves this by handling them independently. For example, China has long engaged in trade with the United States according to its own rules. It continues to do so even now. However, due to the political stance of the two countries, many issues in this trade are deliberately created (through tariffs). Other countries facing pressures from globalization and supply insecurity respond by protecting themselves against all unexpected challenges for the sake of their national security and needs. Currently, one-third of global production takes place in China. This highlights the shortcomings in the 'resilience' and 'reliability' of supply chains. Global conflicts and climate change events have increased the likelihood of disruptions in the supply chain. Minister Jaishankar stated that India is currently rapidly closing the gap with some successful Asian economies based on infrastructure such as highways, railways, air transport, ports, energy, and electricity. By any standards, we are now making progress. The world is taking note of the advancements made by India. Therefore, keeping this in mind, 'Today we are discussing creating new trade arrangements and encouraging new connectivity efforts,'" he concluded his speech.
