The Poompuhar beach in Mayiladuthurai district is a tourist destination of historical significance.
Poompuhar plays a major role as the “city of Puhar” in the twin epics Silappathikaram and Manimekalai.
In Poompuhar, not only the beach but also an art gallery for learning about the lives of Kannagi, Kovalan, and Madhavi, as well as an archaeological research center, are functioning. Because of this, it also serves as a place where tourists gather from time to time.
Tourists who come there often face a shortage of drinking water, and there is also the situation of having to go some distance to relieve themselves. As a result, tourists are greatly inconvenienced.
When speaking to tourists about this, they said, "We’ve all come from out of town. If we come to the beach here to spend time as a family... there isn’t even a restroom for emergencies. They’ve built it about two to three hundred meters away from here, in a place that looks like a forest area.
Young people can somehow manage and walk on. But how can elderly people walk such a long distance? There’s a restroom right next to the beach here. But it’s locked up.
And if this is how it is... the water facilities are terrible. The water in the bottles we brought has run out too, so we’re walking around searching with the bottles in our hands. There isn’t even a single tap. Only a hand pump could be seen in the distance. When we went there and asked... they said the water isn’t fit for drinking.
You have to walk a long way to reach the road before you can get a bottle of water from the shops outside. Due to environmental reasons, they apparently don’t allow shops to be set up in the beach area. Fair enough... but even to throw away trash here, there aren’t even enough large garbage bins. With no proper maintenance, it’s in very bad condition.
They say this place has been renovated at a cost of several crores. But there is no drinking water to quench thirst. The bathrooms that were built have not even been opened. There isn’t even a place to change clothes... How will tourists come if it is in this condition? Such an important place... and they have left it like this!" they lamented.
Regarding this, we contacted Mayiladuthurai district tourism officer Muthusamy and spoke with him. "The toilets will be opened soon. Also, since last April, the 34-acre Poompuhar tourist complex has been brought under the Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation.
We have recommended to the Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation the facilities needed for the beach. From now on, the Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation should prepare the project estimate, float tenders, and carry out the work one by one," he said.

கடற்கரைக்குத் தேவையான வசதிகள் குறித்துத் தமிழ்நாடு சுற்றுலா வளர்ச்சிக் கழகத்திற்குப் பரிந்துரைத்துள்ளோம். இனி தமிழ்நாடு சுற்றுலா வளர்ச்சிக் கழகம் திட்ட மதிப்பீடு தயார் செய்து, டெண்டர் விட்டு ஒவ்வொன்றாகச் செய்ய வேண்டும்” என்றார்.
