BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia clarified on Thursday (June 18) the question of whether the number of IPL matches will be increased from 74 to 94 starting next year.
After the 70 matches played in the league stage of the IPL season are completed, the teams finishing in the top 4 positions on the points table will qualify for the playoff round. The playoff round will feature 4 matches: the qualifier, eliminator, and final.
Through this, a total of 74 matches are held in an IPL season, including the playoff matches. IPL chairman Arun Dhumal had said that they were planning to change this format and conduct a total of 94 matches.
Speaking about this, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia said:
As far as increasing the number of matches is concerned, that is not possible at present. Because we have to take into account that the players come from various countries. We are already facing great difficulty just to get this two-month window.
In this situation, if the number of matches increases further, the number of days will also be extended. This will create a difficult situation. Because players from other countries also have to play for their national teams. As a result, the schedules for international matches will change.
Therefore, at this time, there is no discussion about increasing the number of matches from 74 to 94. Even so, this is not going to happen immediately. I do not know what the situation will be like in the coming years. But at this moment, I see no circumstances for increasing the number of matches from 74 to 94.
Because this should not be considered from India’s perspective alone. Instead, the other ICC cricket nations must also be taken into account. In particular, players from Australia, England, New Zealand, South Africa, and the West Indies also participate in this tournament, Devajit Saikia said.
