Madurai: The High Court has ordered a ban on conducting campfires and music events at private resorts in the Anamalai Tiger Reserve area.
In a petition filed before the Madurai Bench of the High Court by five people, including Balakrishnan and Selva Ganapathi from Kodaikanal, it was stated: “The Anamalai Tiger Reserve buffer zone was expanded, and some areas of the Kodaikanal and Dindigul forest divisions were also included. This boundary begins in Poondi village and passes through the villages of Mannavanur and Kookkal before reaching Andipatti.
Without prior approval from the National Wildlife Board, resorts, hotels, parks, and similar structures should not be built in this area. However, in Kodaikanal, unauthorized commercial buildings have been constructed without proper permission.
Therefore, in addition to imposing a ban on granting permission for any commercial buildings in the inter-zone area of the Manavanur village Anamalai Tiger Reserve, orders should be issued to remove the illegally constructed commercial buildings in Manavanur village and restore the area to its natural state,” the petition stated.
This petition came up for hearing today before the bench of Judges Sathishkumar and Jyothiraman. At that time, on the petitioner’s side, it was stated that in the area mentioned in the petition, commercial buildings have been constructed, and as a result, a “camp fire” is set up every day and music performances are held. It was also stated that these constructions were built without obtaining any permission.
Taking note of this, the judges ordered the Principal Secretary of the Tamil Nadu Forest Department and the Chief Conservator of Forests of the Anamalai Tiger Reserve to file a counter affidavit in the case, and further directed that no camp fires or music performances should be held in private resorts. They then adjourned the case and transferred it to the bench that hears forest-related cases.
