The free bus service scheme for women in Kerala was launched by the state’s Chief Minister, V.T. Satheesan, on Monday morning.
During the Kerala Legislative Assembly election, Congress had promised that if it came to power, it would provide free bus service to women across the state.
In this situation, after Congress won the Kerala Legislative Assembly election and formed the government, the free bus service scheme for women (the Priyadarshini scheme) has been launched from today.
At a ceremony held in Ernakulam, Chief Minister V.T. Satheesan inaugurated the scheme by flagging it off.
Speaking at the inauguration, V.T. Satheesan said:
The government spends about Rs. 800 crore annually on this scheme. KSRTC employees will play a key role in increasing its revenue. Although private bus owners had expressed some concerns, they too remain an important part of the public transport system. In many areas where government buses do not operate, people depend on private buses. The government will introduce measures to further ensure their contribution.
No sector should be allowed to decline. At the same time, it is the government’s duty to support sectors facing difficulties. The ‘Pride of Priyadarshini’ scheme is a symbol of the respect the government gives to the women of Kerala. It also serves as a message that society must learn to respect women. Notably, the order implementing the Priyadarshini scheme was signed by a woman secretary,” he said.
It has been announced that women and transgender people can travel for free on ordinary buses operated under the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation.

கேரளத்தில் மகளிருக்கு இலவச பேருந்து சேவைத் திட்டத்தை அம் மாநில முதல்வர் வி.டி. சதீசன் திங்கள்கிழமை காலை தொடக்கி வைத்தார்.

எர்ணகுளத்தில் நடைபெற்ற விழாவில் இத்திட்டத்தை கொடியசைத்து முதல்வர் வி.டி. சதீசன் தொடக்கிவைத்தார்.

இந்தத் திட்டத்துக்காக ஆண்டுதோறும் சுமார் ரூ. 800 கோடி ரூபாயை அரசு செலவிடுகிறது. கே.எஸ்.ஆர்.டி.சி.யின் வருவாயை அதிகரிப்பதில் அதன் ஊழியர்கள் முக்கியப் பங்காற்றுவார்கள். தனியார் பேருந்து உரிமையாளர்கள் சில கவலைகளைத் தெரிவித்திருந்தாலும், அவர்களும் பொதுப் போக்குவரத்து அமைப்பின் ஒரு முக்கிய அங்கமாகவே உள்ளனர். அரசுப் பேருந்துகள் இயங்காத பல பகுதிகளில் மக்கள் தனியார் பேருந்துகளையே நம்பியுள்ளனர். அவர்களின் பங்களிப்பை மேலும் உறுதி செய்வதற்கான வழிமுறைகளை அரசு அறிமுகப்படுத்தும்.

கேரள மாநிலப் போக்குவரத்துக் கழகத்தின் கீழ் இயக்கப்படும் சாதாரணப் பேருந்துகளில் மகளிர் மற்றும் மூன்றாம் பாலினத்தவர் இலவசமாக பயணிக்கலாம் எனத் தெரிவிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது.
