PMK founder Ramadoss has urged the Central and State governments to take steps to ensure the easy availability of key chemotherapy drugs widely used in cancer treatment across the country.

It is concerning that there is a severe shortage of cisplatin and carboplatin, two major chemotherapy drugs widely used in cancer treatment across the country. The central government's approval of price increases for pharmaceutical manufacturers to address this shortage shows that the government itself acknowledges that the drug shortage is a real problem.
To improve the quality of medicines and increase production, it is essential that manufacturers receive a fair price. At the same time, the government must also take into account the livelihoods of poor and middle-class patients undergoing cancer treatment.
Every year, lakhs of people in India are affected by cancer. Most of them rely on government hospitals for treatment. Many families fall into debt because of treatment expenses. In this situation, the rise in the prices of chemotherapy drugs poses the risk of creating an additional financial burden for patients and their families.
Therefore, while the central government has allowed pharmaceutical manufacturers to raise prices, it should also immediately take the following measures:
The central government should provide all chemotherapy medicines, including cisplatin and carboplatin, at subsidized prices in the required quantities to central government hospitals and state government hospitals.
A special scheme should be created to provide these medicines free of cost to poor and economically disadvantaged patients.
The government should bear the full cost of these medicines under medical insurance schemes such as Ayushman Bharat and the Chief Minister’s Medical Insurance Scheme.
The central government should formulate long-term plans to increase domestic production and ensure the availability of raw materials so that there is no shortage of medicines.
The National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority should strengthen price monitoring and distribution monitoring systems so that patients are not affected by drug price increases.
It should ensure that these medicines are available without interruption in all cancer treatment centers, up to district government hospitals.
Cancer is a disease that severely affects a family’s finances and mental well-being. The interests of drug manufacturers are important; at the same time, patients’ lives are equally important. Therefore, along with policies that encourage drug production, the central and state governments should work together to ensure that treatment is not affected for poor and vulnerable people.
"Drug manufacturing must grow; at the same time, the patient's life must be protected" is the urgent need of the hour, he said.

தேசிய மருந்து விலை நிர்ணய ஆணையம் மருந்து விலை உயர்வால் நோயாளிகள் பாதிக்கப்படாத வகையில் விலை கண்காணிப்பு மற்றும் விநியோக கண்காணிப்பு அமைப்புகளை வலுப்படுத்த வேண்டும்.
மாவட்ட அரசு மருத்துவமனைகள் வரை அனைத்து புற்றுநோய் சிகிச்சை மையங்களிலும் இந்த மருந்துகள் தடையின்றி கிடைப்பதை உறுதி செய்ய வேண்டும்.
புற்றுநோய் என்பது ஒரு குடும்பத்தின் பொருளாதாரத்தையும் மனநிலையையும் கடுமையாக பாதிக்கும் நோயாகும். மருந்து உற்பத்தியாளர்களின் நலனும் முக்கியம்; அதே அளவில் நோயாளிகளின் உயிரும் முக்கியம். எனவே மருந்து உற்பத்தியை ஊக்குவிக்கும் கொள்கைகளுடன், ஏழை எளிய மக்களுக்கு சிகிச்சை பாதிக்கப்படாத வகையில் மத்திய மற்றும் மாநில அரசுகள் ஒருங்கிணைந்து செயல்பட வேண்டும்.
