Police on Sunday arrested two men who robbed jewelry and cash from a woman staying alone at a farmhouse near Rasipuram after threatening her with a gun and a knife.
Kalaiselvi (58) is from the Amman Temple Garden area on the R. Pattinam-Kalarampatti road in Rasipuram taluk, Namakkal district. After her husband Sadhasivam died and her two daughters got married and moved away, she had been living alone in the farmhouse. Near her house, her relatives Ashok Kumar and Ganapathi run a concrete block manufacturing unit.
At this point, her sons-in-law and the workers finished their work and left at around 7 p.m. on Thursday night. Kalaiselvi had gone to her daughter’s house in Rasipuram town and returned to the house in the garden at 8 p.m.
After that, around 8:45 p.m., two men who had been watching Kalaiselvi entered the house. Wearing masks, they gagged Kalaiselvi, threatened her with a gun and a knife, and snatched the jewelry she was wearing around her neck and ears.
They also looted jewelry and cash from the cupboard, taking about 16 sovereigns of gold jewelry and Rs. 20,000 in cash, and fled on a two-wheeler.
Kalaiselvi informed her sons-in-law and daughters who were in Rasipuram about this. They came to the garden and informed the Rasipuram police station.
Following this, Rasipuram DSP M. Vijayakumar, Police Inspector R. Nagalakshmi, and others went to the scene in person and conducted an investigation. Fingerprint experts and a sniffer dog were brought in, and evidence was collected.
Subsequently, Coimbatore Range DIG P. Swaminathan and Namakkal District SP C. Vimala also went to the scene of the robbery and questioned the relatives and workers of the brick kiln. A special team was then formed to catch the masked robbers, and an intensive investigation was carried out.
At this stage, suspicion arose over a person who had worked at the concrete block manufacturing unit, and he was taken in and questioned. It was then revealed that he had, along with his relative, stolen jewelry and cash from Kalaiselvi’s house. Rajaguhan (22) from Murungapatti in Rasipuram, Namakkal district, and Ajithkumar (22) from Pethanaickenpalayam in Salem district were arrested on Sunday.
Ajithkumar already has two theft cases against him.
