Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam, who were arrested in the Delhi riots case and are currently lodged in prison, have filed fresh bail petitions in the Delhi court.
The petitions argue that no significant progress has been made in the trial of this case, even though the Supreme Court had dismissed their earlier bail plea six months ago.
The new petitions were filed before Additional Sessions Judge Sumedh Saini. The judge sought a response from the Delhi Police on Friday and adjourned the hearing in the case to July 4.
In his petition, Imam stated that he has been in prison for the past 6 years and that there has been no significant progress in the case following the Supreme Court’s rejection of his bail plea on January 5.
In northeast Delhi, protests held in February 2020 against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) turned violent and caused a major uproar across the country. Fifty-three people died in the riots, and more than 700 were injured. In this riot case, 15 people, including former JNU students Sharjeel Imam and Umar Khalid, were arrested under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and jailed.
Several petitions were filed in the Supreme Court regarding granting them bail. The hearing on this matter was held last year. At that time, the Delhi Police strongly opposed granting bail to the accused persons.
In the detailed conspiracy case related to the Delhi riots, the Supreme Court in January refused to grant bail to Khalid and Imam. At the same time, it granted relief to five other accused in the case.
In this situation, Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam have once again filed new bail petitions in the Delhi High Court.
