Sometimes, when we go to a police station to file a complaint, we hear them say, “This does not fall within our jurisdiction.” We have even heard this line in movies.
Ordinary people do not know which jurisdiction a crime falls under. We usually go and file a complaint at the police station nearby or at a police station we know.
At such times, saying “This does not fall within our jurisdiction” does not work. To fix this problem, there is the “Zero FIR.”
What is a Zero FIR?
An FIR is the first complaint registered with the police regarding a criminal incident.
Generally, there was a practice that the FIR had to be registered at the police station in the area where the crime took place.
But people cannot always go to the exact place where the crime occurred and file a complaint. Especially while traveling, in emergency situations like violence against women or children going missing, this becomes a major problem.
That is why the 'Zero FIR' system was introduced.
Under this system, a complaint can be filed at any police station, regardless of where the crime took place.
The police cannot refuse the complaint by saying, 'This is not our jurisdiction.'
They must register that complaint as a '0' FIR and take immediate action. After that, the case will be transferred to the police station in the area where the incident occurred.
Why is this important?
Whether a woman has been sexually harassed, a child has gone missing, or someone has been abducted, every minute matters in that moment.
In such a situation, running around looking for a police station will further affect the victim’s time and mental state.
That is why this 'Zero FIR' is an important right that everyone should know about.
A simple example...
Suppose you are traveling from one town to another.
If your mobile phone goes missing at that time, there is no need to find out exactly where it was lost and go only to the police station in that area.
You can file a complaint at the police station in the place where you are currently. They must accept it and take action.
Likewise, people have the right to file a complaint at any nearby police station in any emergency situation such as violence against women, sexual harassment, or children going missing.
After the sexual assault incident that took place in Delhi in 2012, this Zero FIR procedure began to be emphasized more in India.

அந்த நேரத்தில் உங்கள் கைபேசி காணாமல் போய்விட்டது என்றால், அது எந்த இடத்தில் தொலைந்தது என்பதைக் கண்டுபிடித்து அந்தப் பகுதி காவல் நிலையத்துக்கே போக வேண்டும் என்ற அவசியம் இல்லை.
நீங்கள் தற்போது இருக்கும் இடத்தில் உள்ள காவல் நிலையத்திலேயே புகார் அளிக்கலாம். அவர்கள் அதை ஏற்று நடவடிக்கை எடுக்க வேண்டும்.
