The buzz in the industry now is whether the investment that was supposed to come to Tamil Nadu is shifting toward Andhra Pradesh.
Last September, Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited signed a memorandum of understanding with 'Guidance Tamil Nadu' to build a greenfield shipbuilding yard in Thoothukudi.
The company had also said that Rs. 15,000 - 18,000 crore would be invested in Tamil Nadu for that project.
This greenfield shipyard was planned on 1,050 acres. The plan was to manufacture very large crude oil tankers of up to 3 lakh DWT (Deadweight Tonnage) there.
The duration of this project will be 10–12 years.
But the sensational news is that Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited has slowly moved toward Andhra because the Tamil Nadu government has still not allotted land for this project.
The Mazagon company is currently looking for land in Andhra Pradesh for a shipbuilding yard worth nearly Rs. 29,000 crore.
They say that when the same project planned in Tamil Nadu is taken to Andhra, it has been expanded into a mega shipbuilding yard of nearly 2,000 acres.
Voices are being raised that a project moving from Tamil Nadu to Andhra is not good for Tamil Nadu’s industry.

"According to the Ministry of Shipping's guidelines, a shipbuilding yard in India must have 2,000 acres. But Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited is asking for only 600 acres.
Moreover, the same site that Hyundai has requested in Thoothukudi is also being sought by Mazagon. Since an agreement has already been signed with Hyundai for that location, it cannot be given to Mazagon either.
On the other hand, if Hyundai and Mazagon were to enter into a joint agreement, the 2,000-acre issue would not arise. But that arrangement does not suit the two companies.
Therefore, talks are under way with some other companies. They are also looking at a site that matches Mazagon’s requirements. If both come together, there will be no problem in Mazagon setting up a shipbuilding yard in Tamil Nadu," they say.
Meanwhile, it is noteworthy that Tamil Nadu Industries Minister Keerthana met and spoke with key Hyundai executives during her South Korea visit today.

மசகான் நிறுவனம் தற்போது ஆந்திராவில் கிட்டத்தட்ட ரூ.29,000 கோடி மதிப்புள்ள கப்பல் கட்டும் தளத்திற்காக இடம் தேடி வருகிறது.
தமிழ்நாட்டில் பிளான் செய்த அதே திட்டத்தை, ஆந்திராவிற்கு எடுத்துச் செல்லும் போது, கிட்டத்தட்ட 2,000 ஏக்கர் கொண்ட மெகா கப்பல் கட்டும் தளமாக விரிவு செய்துள்ளது என்கிறார்கள்.
தமிழ்நாட்டில் இருந்து ஆந்திரா பக்கம் ஒரு திட்டம் செல்வது தமிழ்நாடு தொழிற்துறைக்கு நல்லதல்ல என்கிற குரல்கள் எழுகின்றனர்.
இது குறித்து தமிழ்நாடு தொழிற்துறையின் சில முக்கிய அதிகாரிகளிடம் பேசினோம்…
