On July 30, 2024, a landslide known as the Urulpottal occurred in the Mundakkai and Sooralmal areas of Wayanad district, Kerala. More than 200 people lost their lives in the disaster. During the election period, Mammootty, thinking that this should not turn into a political event, said, "If you always come with me, won't people misunderstand and think I came here because of you? So please stand aside." This statement made the video go viral on social media. CPM officials have been posting negative comments, saying Mammootty does not know how to behave in public. At the same time, some others have said there was nothing wrong with Mammootty's statement, as he is an apolitical actor.
