Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said on Monday that the central government is taking various initiatives to attract foreign investment.
In order to counter pressure on the rupee and attract foreign investment, the central government on June 5 introduced an ordinance to amend the Income Tax Act to grant tax exemption on interest income and capital gains arising from the sale, transfer or exchange of government securities.
To further strengthen this, the Reserve Bank removed the three limits under the general route for investments: the short-term debt limit, the concentration limit, and the security-wise limit.
It is expected that these two initiatives will enable the government to borrow at lower interest rates and increase foreign investment.
Pointing this out, Nirmala Sitharaman, speaking further at the Mindmine conference held in Delhi, said:
Due to the global geopolitical situation, there is a severe shortage in the import of raw materials, crude oil, and fertilizers. The Indian economy must be prepared to face such external pressures.
A study conducted by the Reserve Bank and the Central Government stated that the debt market is a key hub for attracting foreign investment. Based on this, the Central Government and the Reserve Bank introduced some initiatives on June 5.
With the aim of encouraging external commercial borrowings among public sector enterprises, the Reserve Bank introduced foreign exchange swaps. He said these are only initial reforms and not the final ones; several more initiatives will be undertaken in the coming days.
Following the closure of the Strait of Hormuz due to tensions in West Asia, the movement of cargo ships carrying crude oil, cooking gas, and fertilizers has been disrupted. As a result, India’s import costs have increased manifold.
It is noteworthy that India’s foreign exchange reserves fell by $7.11 billion in the week ended June 5, to $681.61 billion.
