In the recently concluded Kerala state assembly elections, out of a total of 140 constituencies, the Congress alliance won 102 seats, the CPM alliance won 35 seats, and the BJP won 3 seats. Since 71 MLAs are enough to form the government, the Congress alliance secured a significant victory by winning additional seats. In this context, discussions took place about who could be appointed as the Chief Minister. The senior members in the party were former Kerala assembly opposition leader Ramesh Chennithala, All India Congress General Secretary K.C. Venugopal, and the current opposition leader V.D. Satheesan, all of whom were contenders for the Chief Minister position.
Since the current Kerala Legislative Assembly term ends on May 23, the Congress had ample time to select a Chief Minister candidate. However, supporters of K.C. Venugopal, V.D. Satheesan, and Ramesh Chennithala created chaos in Kerala by putting up placards and staging protests on the roads. Supporters of V.D. Satheesan tore down the placards put up by K.C. புதிய முதல்வர் வி.டி.சதீசனுக்கு அகில இந்திய காங்கிரஸ் பொதுச் செயலாளர் கே.சி.வேணுகோபால் வாழ்த்துக்களை தெரிவித்துள்ளார். இதுகுறித்து கே.சி.வேணுகோபால் கூறுகையில், “கேரள முதல்வர் குறித்து கட்சியின் ஹை கமாண்ட் தீர்மானம் எடுக்கும் என நான் ஏற்கனவே சொல்லியிருந்தேன். ஹை கமாண்ட் முடிவை ஏற்றுக்கொண்டு வி.டி.சதீசனுக்கு எல்லாவிதத்திலும் ஆதரவாக இருப்போம்” என்றார்.
