In 2018, the Tamil Nadu government ordered the closure of Vedanta's Sterlite plant in Tuticorin, citing pollution of air, land, and water. Opposing this order, the Chennai High Court in 2020 dismissed the case filed on behalf of Vedanta's Sterlite plant management and issued a ruling. The Supreme Court also upheld this ruling. In this context, a new case has been filed in the Chennai High Court on behalf of Vedanta, seeking permission to establish a plant producing green copper. The Sterlite plant is mentioned in that petition.
From June to November last year, six letters requesting permission to establish a green copper factory in Thoothukudi were sent to the secretaries of the Tamil Nadu Industries and Tamil Nadu Environment Departments, but they were not considered. Therefore, the Tamil Nadu government must be directed to consider our company's requests. A committee comprising representatives and experts from the Central Environment Department, Central Pollution Control Board, and other relevant departments should be formed to study the feasibility of establishing the green copper factory and submit a report, it was stated. This case came up for hearing before a bench comprising Chief Justice Srivastava and Justice Arulmurugan.
At that time, additional pleader Vijay Anand appeared on behalf of the government and stated, "The petition regarding the establishment of the Pasumai Thamiram plant has been submitted only to the government department secretaries. It has not been properly applied to the relevant departments. Cases requesting the disposal of hazardous waste from the closed Sterlite plant premises are pending."
