The referee controversy in Scotland’s historic victory at the 2026 FIFA World Cup has sparked huge criticism on social media.
In the Group C match between Haiti and Scotland, Scotland won 1-0. Scotland have secured their first victory since 1990. Even so, the handball controversy in this match has overshadowed it.
In the 79th minute of this match, Scotland defender Grant Hanley appeared to block with his hands inside the penalty box a shot taken by Haiti midfielder Jean-Ricner Bellegarde.
According to the football rules, Haiti should have been awarded a penalty for a handball infringement if the ball was blocked with the hands inside the penalty box. However, it is shocking that neither the on-field referee nor the VAR referee awarded a penalty.
