An investigation is underway into allegations that irregularities took place in the gold plating of the statues of the Dwarapalakas at the Sabarimala Ayyappa Swamy temple in 2019.

In this case, Pankaj Bhandari, the owner and chief executive officer of Chennai-based 'Smart Creations', has been added as the 9th accused.
The Special Investigation Team found that the gold was separated at 'Smart Creations'. In this case, K.P. Pradeep acted as the lawyer for Smart Creations.
It is noteworthy that, in the early stages, lawyer K.P. Pradeep was the one who spoke to the media on behalf of Pankaj Bhandari and his company.
In this context, the Congress government led by V.D. Satheesan appointed K.P. Pradeep as the government prosecutor in the Sabarimala gold theft case. This led to criticism that government-side information could be passed on to the accused.
It was said that this responsibility was given to him based on his experience appearing in cases related to the Devaswom Board. However, the question arose whether it was proper to appoint as a government prosecutor someone who had argued in support of the accused.
Commenting on this, Devaswom Minister K. Muraleedharan said, "It is good to have as a government prosecutor someone who knows the weaknesses of the accused side. The authority to appoint a government prosecutor had been entrusted to the Chief Minister.
I did not participate in that cabinet meeting. However, ministers must abide by the decision taken in the cabinet; that is collective responsibility. The accused in this gold theft case cannot escape under any circumstances," he said.
Previously, the Devaswom Board had only the post of “Senior Government Lawyer.” Now, three posts of “Special Government Lawyers” have been created. At the same time, the appointment of K.P. Pradeep as a special government lawyer for the Devaswom Board sparked controversy.
The opposition also objected to this appointment. Following the pressure on the government, K.P. Pradeep resigned from the post of government lawyer under the guidance of Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan.
