Madurai: The High Court has ordered the Tamil Nadu government to respond in a case seeking the arrest of those continuously involved in forest crimes in the state under the Goondas Act.
Mani Bharathi from Madurai filed a petition before the High Court bench: Crimes such as cutting down trees, hunting wildlife, smuggling, destroying elephant corridors, and causing forest fires continue to take place in the southern districts. Many people keep committing these offenses repeatedly. However, they are not being treated as forest offenders and arrested under the Goondas Act.
In Tamil Nadu, from 2009 to 2019, only 26 people in the forest offenders category were arrested under the Goondas Act. Since many posts in the Forest Department, including Forest Guard and Forest Range Officer, are vacant, there has been a slowdown in preventing and investigating crimes. Therefore, to prevent forest crimes in Tamil Nadu and protect wildlife, orders should be issued to arrest forest offenders under the Goondas Act. This was stated in the petition.
The bench of Judges Satish Kumar and Jyothiraman heard this petition and, in connection with the petition, ordered the Home Department and Forest Department Principal Secretaries and the Chief Conservator of Forests to file a report, thereby adjourned the hearing.

தமிழகத்தில் 2009 முதல் 2019 வரை வனக் குற்றவாளிகள் பிரிவில் 26 பேர் மட்டுமே குண்டர் சட்டத்தில் கைது செய்யப்பட்டுள்ளனர். வனத்துறையில் வனப்பாதுகாவலர், வனச்சரக அலுவலர் உள்ளிட்ட பல பணியிடங்கள் காலியாக இருப்பதால் குற்றங்களை தடுப்பதற்கும், விசாரிப்பதிலும் தொய்வு ஏற்பட்டுள்ளது. எனவே, தமிழகத்தில் வனக் குற்றங்களை தடுக்கவும், வனவிலங்குகளை பாதுகாக்கவும் வனக் குற்றவாளிகளை குண்டர் சட்டத்தில் கைது செய்ய உத்தரவிட வேண்டும். இவ்வாறு மனுவில் கூறப்பட்டிருந்தது.
இந்த மனுவை நீதிபதிகள் சதீஷ்குமார், ஜோதிராமன் அமர்வு விசாரித்து, மனு தொடர்பாக உள்துறை, வனத்துறை முதன்மை செயலர்கள், தலைமை வனப் பாதுகாவலர் ஆகியோர் அறிக்கை தாக்கல் செய்ய உத்தரவிட்டு விசாரணையை தள்ளிவைத்தனர்.
