Vriddhachalam: Hindustan Oil Company has planned to set up a hydrocarbon well in the sea near Parangipettai, a coastal area in Cuddalore district. Various political parties are opposing this.
In the Parangipettai area of Cuddalore district, ONGC has been carrying out exploration by setting up oil wells at various locations on land. Meanwhile, Hindustan Oil Company has applied to the Coastal Regulation Authority seeking permission to set up 4 hydrocarbon wells 18 km offshore at an estimated cost of Rs. 425 crore.
Environmental organizations have been voicing opposition, saying that the hydrocarbon project will harm marine resources. In the face of this opposition from environmental groups, the application seeking permission to set up hydrocarbon wells has paved the way for renewed protests in the area.
Arul, the secretary of the Cuddalore SIPCOT Area Community Environmental Monitoring Organization, has strongly opposed this project. He said that due to factors such as climate change and global warming, which are currently a threat worldwide, the coastal environment, marine life, and the livelihoods of fishermen will be affected. He also said that when the seabed is dug to set up oil wells, the seagrass and coral reefs there will be severely damaged.
MDMK General Secretary Vaiko: The previous DMK government had refused permission for this project. Taking that into account, the current Tamil Nadu government should not allow the hydrocarbon project to be implemented in Parangipettai or in any coastal area of Tamil Nadu.
AMMK General Secretary TTV Dhinakaran: Attempting to install wells in the sea will also put the livelihood of fishermen in jeopardy. The application submitted by Hindustan Oil to the Tamil Nadu government's Coastal Zone Management Authority should be rejected at the outset.
PMK leader Anbumani: If these hydrocarbon wells are set up in the Bay of Bengal, fisheries will be affected; mangrove forests will also be affected. Although the Central government has granted licenses for numerous hydrocarbon projects in coastal areas adjoining Tamil Nadu, the state government has not given approval for those projects due to opposition from parties. That same situation should continue in the future as well.
