`They killed our baby before it even got to see this world....Do the lives of poor people mean so little to them...' The crying voice of Arokkiya Mary, overflowing with helpless grief, still rings in our ears.
Arokkiya Mary's daughter-in-law, Mercy, has been admitted to the intensive care unit of the Chepauk maternity hospital. Outside the ICU, Mercy's husband Stephen and mother-in-law Arokkiya Mary stood overwhelmed by unbearable sorrow. Hearing their story breaks our hearts too.
'We were all born and raised only in Kannagi Nagar, sir. My wife Mercy was pregnant. This is our second child. Our first child was not a normal child. The child had many health problems. So the whole family was eagerly waiting for this second child. It is the 9th month. Since she keeps getting sudden bouts of pain, we are always on alert. On the night of the 8th, she had unbearable pain. Even then, we went only to the nearby urban community health center. The nurses gave her some pain tablets and sent her back. The night was somewhat manageable. Yesterday morning, after I left for work, the unbearable pain came back. My mother then took her to the same hospital again. There is no other maternity hospital in Kannagi Nagar. Even at that hospital, there was no doctor until 10 in the morning. For a while, the nurses tried something. Mercy's pain increased even more. They immediately told us to take her to the Chepauk Kosa hospital.
That hospital is 20 km from here. By the time Mercy reached Chepauk in traffic, she had already collapsed. When we got here and rushed her inside, they said my baby had died in the womb. We were devastated. Mercy is also in serious condition. They said the bleeding would not stop. “Oh God, please save my wife at least,” I said, and after taking my baby, who was born dead, in a cloth bag, I went and performed the funeral rites and came back. I can’t bear this anger, sir. If there had been a doctor at that government hospital in our area, would my child have died without even seeing this world? When I went to the police station to file a complaint against that hospital, they did not accept it and kept making me run around, causing me mental distress. Are we poor people not even worthy of living in this world?” says Mercy’s husband Stephen, overflowing with helplessness.
'I was the one who took Mercy to that hospital. My child was in unbearable pain. As soon as we went in, they kept her on the second floor for a while and the nurses did something. When I asked where the doctors were, there was no answer. There wasn’t a single doctor there. After a while, they brought her back downstairs and prepared to give an injection. Even then, they were so careless. The nurses’ children were running around there playing catch. When I scolded them, saying, “At least look properly and see what’s going on, ma’am,” they immediately said, “We can’t handle it here; take her to Chepakkam Kosavu.” If they had told us that at the beginning instead of wasting two hours, we might have been able to save our child. We are bringing Mercy in an ambulance. There is nothing in that ambulance except a stretcher.
Mercy is suffering from that pain and thirst...thirst... Why is there not even a single bottle of water in the ambulance? They carried her here in agony, and when they brought her to the Chepauk cattle shed, the baby inside her had already died. Our Mercy is now in the ICU, in a serious condition. Whenever she opens her eyes, she laments thinking about the baby. Should we cry for the child we lost...or should we cry that our Mercy must recover? Twenty-five years ago, we were living peacefully in Santhome, and they uprooted us and dumped us in Kannagi Nagar. Our lives ended there. We, one hundred thousand people, live in that Kannagi Nagar. There is no doctor to deliver a pregnant woman’s baby. They say the doctor comes only three days a week—Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. For our Mercy, whose pain started on Tuesday, the baby was buried in her womb itself. What do you think we are, sir...is this all the value you give to the lives of the poor?
"In all these years, you haven’t even built us a single good hospital. The whole country has got freedom, but our Kannagi Nagar still hasn’t. The government still sees us only as trash to be crushed and thrown away, as slaves. Don’t we even have the basic right to live? What happened to us should never happen to anyone else," says Mercy’s mother-in-law, Arokkiya Mary, bursting into tears in a raised voice.
We went in person to the Kannagi Nagar Urban Community Health Centre, which is responsible for all this. Outside itself, it was marked as providing 24-hour medical service. It was also stated that maternity care is provided. A board had also been put up saying that surgical facilities are on the second floor. We tried to speak to the doctor on duty today. The nurses there stopped us and said we could not meet anyone; the zonal officer has ordered them not to speak to us. We immediately called the zonal officer. His phone was switched off. Outside the hospital, we spoke to Kannagi Nagar residents. “Last year itself, a child died like this without a doctor. Within Kannagi Nagar, this hospital is the biggest one.
Whatever it is, you have to come here. But there won’t be any medicines or tablets in stock here. Even blood and urine have to be taken outside for testing. It’s a 24-hour hospital in name only. But after noon, there won’t be any doctors. They’re just running it as a formality with the nurses they have. Everyone here is poor. How can they go to a private hospital? Even in an emergency, you have to run to the Royapettah Government Hospital with your life in your hands. No government has put an end to this misery... If they had even a minimum sense of humanity toward our people, would they have been this indifferent?” asks Kannagi Nagar Manikandan.
We boast that we are at the forefront in the healthcare system. While empty bragging continues that we are ahead of other states in birth and death rates, in the capital city of Chennai, because there was no doctor, a child has died even before being born. The authorities look at Kannagi Nagar as nothing more than a crushed heap of garbage. Mercy’s suffering and the death of her child should shake the conscience of politicians. The government must take the lead and do everything necessary to ensure that such things do not happen again. The government should provide appropriate compensation to Mercy’s family.

‘மெர்ஸியை நான் தான் அந்த ஆஸ்பத்திரிக்கு கூட்டிட்டு போனேன். என் புள்ளைக்கு தாங்க முடியாத வலி. உள்ள போன உடனே கொஞ்ச நேரம் 2 வது மாடியில வச்சு நர்ஸூங்க எதோ பண்ணாங்க. டாக்டருங்க எங்கன்னு கேட்டா எந்த பதிலும் இல்ல. டாக்டர்னு யாருமே அங்க இல்ல. கொஞ்ச நேரம் கழிச்சு திரும்பவும் கீழேயே கொண்டு வந்து ஊசி போட தயார் பண்ணாங்க. அப்ப கூட அவ்வளவு அலட்சியம். நர்ஸூங்களோட குழந்தைங்க அங்க ஓடி புடிச்சு விளையாடிட்டு இருக்குங்க. ஏம்மா ஒழுங்கா என்னன்னு பாருங்கனு திட்டுன உடனே, ‘இங்க முடியாது சேப்பாக்கம் கோசாவுக்கு கூட்டிட்டு போங்கன்னு சொல்லிட்டாங்க.’ 2 மணி நேரம் நேரத்தை ஓட்டாம முதல்லயே சொல்லிருந்தா கூட எங்க புள்ளையை காப்பாத்திருக்கலாம். ஆம்புலன்ஸ்ல மெர்ஸிய தூக்கி வச்சு கொண்டுட்டு வரோம். அந்த ஆம்புலன்ஸ்ல ஸ்ட்ரெச்சரை தவிர எதுவும் இல்லை.
மெர்ஸி அந்த வலிலையும் தண்ணி…தண்ணின்னு தவிக்குறா…ஏன்ய்யா ஆம்புலன்ஸ்ல ஒரு தண்ணி கூடவா இருக்காது? தவிக்க தவிக்க தூக்கிட்டு வந்து சேப்பாக்கம் கோசால சேர்த்தா வயித்துக்குள்ள இருந்த புள்ள செத்துப்போச்சு. எங்க மெர்ஸி இப்போ ஐ.சி.யூவுல சீரியஸா இருக்கா. கண்ண முழிச்சாலே குழந்தையை நினைச்சு புலம்புறா. நாங்க போன குழந்தைக்காக அழட்டுமா…இல்ல எங்க மெர்ஸி குணமாகணும்னு அழட்டுமா? 25 வருசத்துக்கு முன்னாடி சாந்தோம்ல நிம்மதியா இருந்த எங்களை தூக்கி கண்ணகி நகர்ல போட்டாங்க. எங்க வாழ்க்கை அத்தோட போச்சு. நாங்க ஒரு லட்சம் பேரு அந்த கண்ணகி நகர்ல வாழ்றோம். ஒரு புள்ளத்தாச்சி புள்ளைக்கு பிரசவம் பார்க்க டாக்டர் இல்ல. திங்கள், புதன், வெள்ளினு மூணு நாள்தான் டாக்டர் வருவாங்களாம். செவ்வாய் கிழமை வலி வந்த எங்க மெர்ஸிக்கு வயித்துலயே புள்ள சமாதி ஆகிடுச்சு. என்னய்யா நினைச்சுக்கிட்டு இருக்கீங்க எங்கள…ஏழைங்க உசுருன்னா உங்களுக்கு இவ்வளவுதானா?
இத்தனை வருசத்துல ஒரு நல்ல ஆஸ்பத்திரி கூட எங்களுக்கு கட்டிக் கொடுக்கலயே நீங்க. ஊருக்கே சுதந்திரம் கிடைச்சிடுச்சு. எங்க கண்ணகி நகருக்கு இன்னும் சுதந்திரம் கிடைக்கல. எங்களை இன்னும் கசக்கி தூக்கிப் போட்ட குப்பையாவும் அடிமையாவும்தான் அரசாங்கமே பார்க்குது. உயிர் வாழ்ற அடிப்படை உரிமை கூட எங்களுக்கு இல்லையா? எங்களுக்கு நடந்தது இனி யாருக்கும் நடக்கக்கூடாது’ ஓங்கிய குரலில் வெடித்து அழுகிறார் மெர்ஸியின் மாமியார் ஆரோக்கிய மேரி.
இத்தனைக்கும் காரணமான அந்த கண்ணகி நகர் நகர் நகர்ப்புற சமூக நல மருத்துவமனைக்கு நேரில் சென்றோம். வெளியிலேயே 24 மணி நேர மருத்துவ சேவை எனப் போடப்பட்டிருந்தது. மகப்பேறு சிகிச்சை அளிக்கப்படும் என்றும் போடப்பட்டிருந்தது. அறுவை சிகிச்சைக்கான வசதிகள் இரண்டாம் தளத்தில் இருப்பதாக போர்டும் மாட்டியிருந்தார்கள். இன்று பணியில் இருந்த மருத்துவரிடம் பேச முயன்றோம். அங்கிருந்த செவிலயர்கள் நம்மை தடுத்து யாரையும் பார்க்க முடியாது மண்டல அலுவலர் எங்களை பேசக்கூடாது என உத்தரவிட்டிருக்கிறார் என்றார். உடனே மண்டல அலுவலரை அழைத்தோம். அவரின் போன் அணைத்து வைக்கப்பட்டிருந்தது. மருத்துவமனைக்கு வெளியே கண்ணகி நகர்வாசிகளிடம் பேச்சு கொடுத்தோம். ‘போன வருசமே ஒரு குழந்தை இப்படித்தான் டாக்டர் இல்லாம இறந்து போச்சு. இந்த கண்ணகி நகருக்குள்ள இந்த ஆஸ்பத்திரிதான் பெருசு.
