More than a hundred relatives of the young man have staged a road blockade in front of the Eriyur police station, demanding the arrest of those involved in the incident in which the youth died after getting caught in an electric fence near Eriyur.
Sridhar (24), son of Vellaiyan, is from the Koorkampatti area near Eriyur in Dharmapuri district. He works at a petrol bunk in the Eriyur area. On the night of the 29th of last month, Sridhar left saying he was going to a shop and went on a two-wheeler, but when he did not return, his family searched in various places and could not find him. A complaint was filed at the Eriyur police station regarding this. Later, on the 1st, Eriyur police received information that he had been found dead, having been trapped in an illegally erected electric fence in a groundnut field owned by someone named Thangavel near his house in the Koorkampatti area.
Based on the information, the police who went to the scene recovered the body and sent it to Dharmapuri Medical College Hospital for postmortem examination. In the investigation conducted after registering a case in this regard, it was found that when Pounraj (45), from the same area, chased the youth Sridhar, who was standing in the Koorkampatti area, he ran into a nearby groundnut field and got caught in an electric fence. Following this, the police arrested Pounraj and lodged him in jail on Friday. In addition, the police have brought four people believed to be connected to the case to the station and are questioning them.
In this situation, the youth’s family members and relatives, numbering more than a hundred, are staging a road blockade on the road leading to Nagamarai in Eriyur, in front of the Eriyur police station, demanding that the death of the young man be treated as suspicious, that the relevant persons be questioned instead of questioning unrelated people, and that the concerned individuals be arrested. Upon receiving this information, Pennagaram Deputy Superintendent of Police Thangavel, Inspector Suresh, and revenue department officials came and held talks with those participating in the blockade, saying that four people had been brought in and were being questioned on suspicion in connection with the youth’s death, and requesting that the road blockade be withdrawn, while assuring that the concerned person would be arrested soon.
As no agreement was reached on this, the youth’s relatives have continued to stage a road blockade. Since the blockade has continued for more than two hours, traffic congestion has occurred.
