Even before the election in Uttar Pradesh, verbal clashes have begun between Congress and Samajwadi Party members.
The election in Uttar Pradesh, the state with the highest number of assembly constituencies in India (403 seats), is set to be held at the beginning of next year (2027).
As in the last election, Samajwadi Party and Congress want to form an alliance this time as well. Mayawati’s Bahujan Samaj Party is set to contest independently.

Congress VS Samajwadi Party
Amid intensifying alliance negotiations, a war of words has broken out between the Congress and the Samajwadi Party over seat-sharing.
The Congress party is demanding between 150 and 200 seats. However, the Samajwadi Party has offered to allocate a maximum of only 50 seats to Congress.
The Samajwadi Party points to past election statistics and the ground situation as the reason for this.
Seat-sharing dispute
In the 2022 Assembly election, while the Samajwadi Party won a resounding victory in 111 seats, the Congress could manage to win only 2 constituencies.
In addition, the bitter experiences during the 2023 state elections, when Congress refused to allocate the rightful number of seats to the Samajwadi Party, and the prolonged deadlock during the 2024 Lok Sabha election have become major reasons for the current seat-sharing dispute.
However, citing its recognition as a national party and Rahul Gandhi’s growing influence, Congress continues to press for more seats.
Leaders such as Samajwadi MP Shivpal Singh Patel have been openly expressing their dissatisfaction, saying, "Congress candidates won in the last election only because of the Samajwadi Party’s full support. So it is unreasonable for them to ask for more than 50 seats."
Akhilesh tries to put an end to it
Amid these heated verbal clashes, Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav, speaking in a way meant to calm the situation, said, "How many seats we get in the alliance or which constituency goes to whom is not the primary issue.
Our foremost duty is to defeat the ruling BJP and ensure the alliance’s overall victory. This is not about constituencies; it is about victory," he said, trying to put an end to the uproar.

At the same time, the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party has been strongly criticizing these stirrings and differences within the opposition alliance.
With the election battle heating up, will both parties soften their stubbornness, compromise, and reach an agreement? Or will this deadlock over seat-sharing affect the alliance’s chances of victory? We will have to wait and see.
