Chennai: Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president Manickam Tagore has accused the BJP, which came to power promising to provide employment opportunities to 2 crore people every year, of not having fulfilled the promises it made so far.
The statement he has issued in this regard: The Modi government, which has been in power since 2014, came to office by making only empty promises to the youth that it would provide 2 crore jobs every year, but even after 12 years it has not fulfilled the promises it made. As promised, it should have provided jobs to 24 crore people in 12 years. But unemployment, unprecedented in the last 45 years, is rampant in the country.
In a report released by NITI Aayog in August 2026, it was officially revealed that 87 million young people between the ages of 15 and 29 are stuck without education, employment, or vocational training, and that 796 million people have been pushed out of the labor market.
The shocking information that only 8.25 percent of educated graduates have found jobs matching their qualifications, and that unemployment among women graduates stands at 20.4 percent, has exposed the true face of the Modi government’s propaganda politics.
On one side is NEET, which shatters the dream of becoming a doctor; on the other is a socio-economic crisis that leaves young people stranded on the streets, unable even to go to work. Now, the district-level Periodic Labour Force Survey report released by the Union Ministry of Statistics in September 2026 has further exposed this grim reality at the local level.
Across the country, in more than 250 districts, over 25 percent of young people are stuck without education or employment. Overall, in nearly 23.7 percent of the districts surveyed, more than 30 percent of young people have no job opportunities at all, casting a question mark over their future.
This administrative failure and neglect by the Modi government has had a severe impact in Tamil Nadu as well. In Madurai, the principal city of South Tamil Nadu, the unemployment rate has surged to 7.0 percent.
In Tiruvallur district, it is 24.9 percent; in Tiruchi district, 23.9 percent; in Madurai district, 23.8 percent; and in Chennai district, 22.4 percent. Young people are left without proper job opportunities, losing their livelihood and being pushed into stagnation.
In rural Tamil Nadu, where stable salaried jobs are unavailable, 30.4 percent of households are forced to depend on informal daily wage work. The central government, which is imposing the new education policy in the name of providing vocational training to youth, has failed to create dignified employment opportunities for them on the ground.
Having devastated the lives of 8.7 crore young people nationwide and wasted the labor and energy of several crore youth district by district, leaving them stranded, the Modi government’s economic betrayals will never be supported by this younger generation, which is struggling after losing its future.
