Chromepet: The tragic incident in which 4 school students who went to play near their home drowned and died in the Thiruneermalai lake has caused sorrow.
Yuvanesh (10), son of Dayalan, from Krishna Street, Lakshmipuram, Chromepet; Devadarshan (12), son of Kripakaran; Pooja (13), from Ranganathasamy 2nd Street; and Khushi (13), daughter of Lalchand, from Ranganathasamy 1st Street, all four had left home the day before yesterday evening. After that, they did not return home.
Following this, the parents filed a complaint at the Chromepet police station. The police registered a case and searched for the students. Information about the missing children was also shared in WhatsApp groups in the area, and the public was asked to help locate them.
Meanwhile, yesterday morning, the public informed the police that four minors were found dead in the Thiruneermalai lake in the Lakshmipuram area. Police, along with fire and rescue personnel who went to the scene, recovered all four bodies.
During the investigation, it has initially emerged that since it was a school holiday, all four may have gone to the nearby lake to swim, and may have then got stuck in the mud in the lake and drowned.
The recovered bodies were sent to the Tambaram Government Hospital for postmortem examination. The sight of the children’s bodies caused the parents and relatives, who broke down in tears, to create deep sorrow in the area. The Chromepet police are continuing their investigation into the incident.
Safety in lakes
Following the incident in which 4 children drowned in a lake and lost their lives, the public has urged that safety measures be further strengthened in the lakes under the control of the Tambaram Municipal Corporation and the Water Resources Department.
