Hyderabad: The Telangana government is planning to recover the pending fine amount of Rs. 925 crore from vehicles that violated traffic rules, along with electricity charges, from the respective vehicle owners.
To prevent road accidents, vehicle owners must strictly follow traffic regulations. The Supreme Court recently advised state governments that the driving licenses of habitual violators can be revoked. It also said that fines unpaid so far can be recovered from them through electricity bills as well.
In Telangana, from January 1, 2024, to August 15, 2026, 3.7 crore people violated traffic rules. That is 12 lakh people per month. It has been calculated as 39,400 people per day and 27 people per minute. In the past 32 months in Telangana, a fine amount of Rs. 1,332.42 crore has to be collected. However, so far only 25% of them have paid the fine amount. The remaining Rs. 925.77 crore is still pending as fine dues in Telangana alone.
The Telangana Transport Department is considering how to add this to the electricity bill of the concerned individuals.
Traffic rules are being violated by speeding, not stopping at signals, riding without wearing a helmet, driving without a seat belt, driving in the wrong direction, and talking on a cellphone while driving. Many believe that simply collecting fines from those who break the rules is not enough; their driving licenses should also be revoked.
