Thiousands of people receive treatment every day as inpatients and outpatients at the Tiruvannamalai Government Medical College Hospital. In this situation, alarming allegations are circulating that, due to the lack of adequate bed facilities in the maternity ward, mothers admitted for delivery are facing difficulties, and that all medical staff, including doctors, are refusing to pay attention and are insulting and neglecting them with abusive language.
Moreover, pregnant women express concern that the so-called ``PV'' genital examination, when performed by an unqualified and inadequately trained ordinary staff member, causes injury, wounds, and severe infections. They say that improper pressure can cause the amniotic sac protecting the baby to rupture prematurely. It also creates complications during delivery’’.
In this regard, a pregnant woman admitted to the maternity ward for delivery has released a video while in tears. In the video, she says, “They keep saying, ‘I’m doing a PV examination,’ and do it so many times without any responsibility. Because of this, my private part has become sore. I myself said, ‘Just do the surgery.’
“What’s more, I am also a staff nurse. Many people who came for delivery were made to lie on the floor outside. For one woman, her water broke and the baby’s head came out. Even when we say, ‘Please come and check quickly,’ they say, ‘It’s nothing like that, go away.’ They are treating us very badly,” she said, expressing her anguish.
A female relative who had come with the pregnant woman had also spoken in the video. “There is no care at this government hospital. There are no attendants. Everyone is just chatting,” she had alleged. Since this video went viral, the doctors and medical staff have become upset. They have called the pregnant woman’s relative who spoke in the video and forced her to release a new video as well.
In the new video, she has been made to say, “They take good care of the babies that are born. It seemed like there were only minor issues in the way they were caring for the mothers giving birth. I spoke in the video out of frustration.”
Regarding this matter, the principal of Tiruvannamalai Government Medical College Hospital, Edwina Vasanta, also gave an explanation to reporters. That is, ``There are only 8 beds in the maternity ward. In a day, around 40 deliveries take place, with 12 cesarean sections and 25 normal deliveries.
Those who are in pain are admitted to the bed on a priority basis. The complaint of the pregnant woman who released a video claiming she was affected will be investigated. The authenticity will be determined. No one has made such allegations before,” he said.
“The Chief Minister’s explanation is not acceptable either,” say the people of Tiruvannamalai district. Recently, many people have posted videos on social media regarding the allegations against the Tiruvannamalai Government Medical College Hospital.
Just last week, a woman who had brought her son, who was suffering from a fever, to the hospital expressed her anger in frustration, saying, “Without even issuing an OP ticket, all the medical staff are just chatting. Some are even looking at their mobile phones. Even if we go and tell the doctor, they behave arrogantly.”
To put an end to such repeated complaints, the people of Tiruvannamalai district have demanded that the Minister for Public Welfare and Health Department pay attention and take swift action.
