Vellore: Union Minister of State L. Murugan has urged the Tamil Nadu government to abandon the plan to build a new Secretariat complex, which would deprive the fishermen of Pattinapakkam of their livelihood.
A ceremony to provide higher education scholarships to poor and underprivileged students was held yesterday on behalf of Vellore Sri Narayani Peedam. Speaking to reporters after participating in the event, he said: If a new legislative assembly and Secretariat complex is built in Chennai’s Pattinapakkam, more than ten thousand indigenous fishing families who have lived there for generations will be severely affected.
The government order regarding the acquisition of 25.55 acres of land for constructing a new building worth Rs. 1,200 crore, announced under Rule 110 of the Legislative Assembly, has already been issued by the Chief Secretary. But only the survey is being carried out. Ministers saying that the government order has not yet been issued is an act of deceiving the people. The Tamil Nadu government must immediately abandon the Pattinapakkam project, which takes away the livelihood of fishermen.
Due to poor sanitation in Tamil Nadu, dengue fever is spreading rapidly. So far, 16,830 people have been affected, and around 10 have died.
