By-elections are being held today (Oct. 6) for the Thattanchavady Assembly constituency in Puducherry, two Assembly constituencies in West Bengal, and one Lok Sabha constituency in Assam.
The BJP won the West Bengal Assembly election and formed the government. In this election, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari contested and won in the two constituencies of Bhabanipur and Nandigram. He later resigned from the MLA post for the Nandigram constituency. Following this, a by-election is being held for that constituency today.
In this, Hasi Rani Rath, the mother of Suvendu Adhikari’s former aide, is contesting as the BJP candidate. After meeting Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari and speaking with him, Sanjita Pradhan Dev, who had been announced as the candidate on behalf of the Trinamool Congress faction of Mamata Banerjee, declared that she would not contest the election. Following this, the Trinamool Congress faction of Mamata Banerjee is supporting Congress candidate Milan Pradhan in that constituency. Mohammed Etishamul Haque is contesting on behalf of the Trinamool Congress faction of Ritabrata Banerjee. Chandigopal Giri is contesting on behalf of the Communist Party of India (Marxist).
Similarly, a by-election is also being held in the Rejinagar constituency. Humayun Kabir, the leader of the Aam Janata Unnayan Party, who won in that constituency as well as in the Naoda constituency, resigned from the Rejinagar seat. As a result, a by-election is being held there.
In this, Humayun Kabir's son Golam Nabi Azad is contesting on behalf of the BJP, Sagorav Sarkar, on behalf of Mamata Banerjee's faction of the Trinamool Congress, Rafiul Alam Chowdhury, on behalf of Ritabrata Banerjee's faction of the Trinamool Congress, Sabiyujaman Sheikh, and on behalf of the Congress, Muhammad Abdullahi Kaibi are contesting.
Pradyut Bordoloi, the Congress MP from Assam’s Nagaon Lok Sabha constituency, quit the party and joined the BJP. He then contested the Assembly election and became an MLA. As a result, a by-election is being held there.
In that constituency, former MLA Siboni Bora is contesting on behalf of Congress, while former IAS officer Devashis Sharma is contesting on behalf of the BJP.
Puduvai
In the Puducherry Assembly election held last April, Chief Minister N. Rangasamy contested from the two constituencies of Mangalam and Thattanchavady and won both.
In this, he resigned from the Thattanchavady constituency MLA post. Following this, a by-election was announced for the constituency, and voting is being held today.
By-elections are also being held in the two constituencies of Madurantakam and Dharapuram in Tamil Nadu.
