The Asian Games 2026 began in grand style on Saturday in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan. Indian stars Manu Bhaker and Pawan Sehrawat led the parade as the national flag bearers.
The Asian Games, in which countries from the Asian continent participate, are held once every four years. In this context, the Asian Games began on Saturday in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan. Emperor Naruhito of Japan inaugurated the Games. Empress and International Olympic Committee President Kirsty Coventry also took part in the opening ceremony. Top athletes and sportswomen from a total of 40 sports are participating in this event, which will continue until Oct. 4.
Start amid difficulties:
The Nagoya Asian Games have begun amid various difficulties. More athletes are participating in these Asian Games than in the Olympic Games. A total of 11,000 athletes and 6,000 officials have gathered, exceeding the set target. This has created difficulties in making accommodation arrangements. To prevent excessive spending, instead of setting up the usual Olympic village, athletes have been housed in container cabins, hotels, luxury ships, and similar facilities.
Meanwhile, the competitions began with a variety of cultural performances. The father-son duo of Japanese hammer throw medalists Shigenobu Murofushi and Koji Murofushi carried the Olympic torch.
Parade led by Manu Bhaker and Pawan Sehrawat:
Indian team star shooter Manu Bhaker and kabaddi star Pawan Sehrawat led the team, carrying the national flag, and marched proudly at the head of the procession. A group of 150 people, dressed in dark blue sarees and outfits, marched along.
On the Japanese side, which is hosting the event, a group of 900 people took part in the parade.
The stadium where the opening ceremony was held has a seating capacity of 30,000 spectators. However, most of the seats were empty.
Japan is now set to host the Asian Games for the third time, after 1964 and 2021.
Ceremony showcasing modern technology:
The Aichi-Nagoya region is a major manufacturing hub. In keeping with that, the opening ceremony showcased modern technological prowess. Laser displays captivated the spectators. The ceremony was held under the theme “One Asia.” A giant heart was displayed in the sky in a laser show.
As usual, China is expected to top the medal tally. At the previous Hangzhou Games, China had won 383 medals, including 201 golds.
For the first time in this competition, e-sports, break dancing, BMX cycling, padel, and MMA are being introduced.
Among the young stars participating are Indian cricketer Vaibhav Suryavanshi, Philippine tennis player Alexandra Eala, and Chinese swimmer Yu Zidi.
Impact caused by the national anthem being played incorrectly:
In the men’s hockey match, South Korea and Bangladesh faced off. South Korea won 5-0. After Bangladesh’s national anthem
The South Korean national anthem was supposed to be played. But because the North Korean national anthem was played, the South Korean team was furious.
The competition organizers immediately rushed in and apologized.
Teqball - a bronze medal chance for India
In the teqball semifinal between Indonesia and India, India’s Quimsy D’Souza lost to Indonesia’s Sumaya by a score of 9-12, 12-7. Although she lost in the semifinal, Quimsy will take part in the bronze medal match. Teqball has been included in the Asian Games for the first time.
