Chennai: Arappor Iyakkam filed a complaint on Tuesday alleging that tender irregularities had taken place in Tambaram Municipal Corporation in violation of legal rules. In this situation, the Tamil Nadu government has taken action on it.
In a statement issued by the government in this regard, it said: In the matter of tenders invited for two works in Tambaram Municipal Corporation, the shortcomings pointed out by Arappor Iyakkam were subjected to a preliminary inquiry by the Additional Chief Secretary to the Government of the Municipal Administration and Water Supply Department, and, following that, appropriate action has been taken.
In Tambaram Municipal Corporation, for the beautification work of the city by installing a water conservation statue in the Chitlapakkam area under Zone 4 at an estimated cost of Rs. 18.60 lakh, and for the beautification work of the city by installing an Ashoka Pillar statue in the Perungalathur area under Zone 4 at an estimated cost of Rs. 27.30 lakh, it was placed before the council on 14.07.2026 and administrative approval has been obtained, with the works to be implemented through public funds or CSR.
Subsequently, on 23.07.2026, the Municipal Commissioner granted permission to issue a tender notice for the above-mentioned works. Meanwhile, on 24.07.2026, a private company submitted a letter stating that it would carry out the above two works. Thereafter, although the said company completed both the above works, it was found that the issuance of the tender notice on 06.08.2026 constituted a procedural lapse.
No work order was issued in the above incident, and no expenditure was incurred from the municipal corporation’s general fund. However, for procedural lapses, the concerned Zonal Assistant Executive Engineer of Tambaram Municipal Corporation has been placed under suspension.
The Municipal Commissioner has been relieved from duty by the government and placed on the waiting list.
Furthermore, the government has ordered the Director of Municipal Administration to conduct a detailed inquiry into this incident. The government has stated that, based on the inquiry report, appropriate follow-up action will be taken without any omission against all persons found guilty.
Arappor Iyakkam welcomes the move
“Today, based on the tender irregularity complaint filed by Arappor Iyakkam against Tambaram Municipal Corporation Commissioner Balachandar IAS, he has been transferred to the waiting list. Arappor Iyakkam welcomes this initial action.
Departmental action and criminal action should continue to be taken against all public servants involved. The contractor should be blacklisted. Arappor will continue,” Arappor Iyakkam posted on social media.
Earlier, Arappor Iyakkam brought to light, with proper evidence, a major irregularity in Tambaram Municipal Corporation, where tender rules were blatantly violated and, through collusion, the work was completed and an inauguration ceremony was held even before the tender was called for. It is shocking that such tender irregularities are taking place under the TVK government, which had been promising to provide corruption-free governance.
Arappor Iyakkam had stated that it had sent a detailed complaint petition with evidence today to the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, the Chief Secretary, the Additional Chief Secretary of the Municipal Administration and Water Supply Department, the Director of Municipal Administration, and the Director of the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption regarding this irregularity.
