Chennai: Four people were injured in a clash between inmates at the Saidapet branch prison.
Due to a shortage of space at Chennai Puzhal Central Prison, 23 inmates who were being held there were transferred to the Saidapet branch prison last week. It is said that they complained there was not enough space and requested the prison administration to transfer them back to Puzhal Central Prison. However, it appears that the prison administration did not take any action regarding this.
Angered by this, the prisoners transferred from Puzhal prison reportedly attacked four inmates who were preparing food in the kitchen of the Saidapet branch prison yesterday morning. This led to a clash between the two groups. During the altercation, they attacked one another repeatedly, leaving four inmates injured. Seeing this, the prison guards rushed in and pacified both sides. They also rescued the four injured inmates and admitted them to the government hospital for treatment.
Following this, the DIG of the Prisons Department, Palani, went to the Saidapet sub-jail, reviewed the surveillance camera footage there, and conducted an inquiry. He then ordered that all 27 people, including the 23 prisoners transferred from Puzhal Central Prison and the 4 prisoners injured in the clash, be transferred back to Puzhal Central Prison.
Accordingly, on the orders of prison officials, the police took all 27 prisoners under heavy security to Puzhal Central Prison and lodged them there the evening before yesterday. Meanwhile, in connection with this clash incident, the prison administration is conducting an inquiry with the prisoners Joshua, Sanjay alias Jango, kumar, Vignesh, Surya, Arun, Satish, Dineshkumar, Vella Sarath, Vasanthakumar, and others.
