Poonamallee: A 15-year-old student was declared brain dead during a state-level boxing competition held at a private school in the Ayanambakkam area. The fact that the student’s parents donated his organs moved everyone.
Chandrababu (45) is from Kerala. He works as an engineer at a private software company in Perungalathur, Chengalpattu district.
His wife is Reshmi (41). Their son Harish (15), who lives with the family in teacher housing in Ambattur, Chennai, had been studying in the 10th standard at a private school in the Surapattu area.
Harish, who participated in the state-level boxing competition held last week at a private school campus in the Ayanambakkam area near Thiruverkadu, advanced to the final round.
Harish, who took part in the final match held on the 12th at that school campus, suddenly collapsed. Shocked teachers rescued Harish and admitted him for treatment at a private hospital in Ayanambakkam.
Harish, who had been receiving intensive treatment there, was declared brain dead the night before last.
Following this, Harish’s parents informed the hospital administration that they wished to donate their son’s organs.
Yesterday, private hospital doctors removed seven organs from Harish, including his eyes, heart, pancreas, kidneys, and intestines, and carried out the matching process for transplant recipients.
After that, Harish's body was subjected to a postmortem examination and handed over to his parents. Tiruvallur police have registered a case and are investigating this matter.
