New Delhi: On the 42nd death anniversary of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi yesterday, many senior leaders, including Lok Sabha Opposition Leader Rahul Gandhi, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, the party’s parliamentary leader Sonia Gandhi, and party General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi, paid tribute at her memorial, Shakti Sthal, in Delhi.
Meanwhile, Rahul Gandhi shared memories of his grandmother Indira Gandhi and posted on the ‘X’ platform a photograph taken with her when he was a child. “Grandmother, this is the beautiful gift you gave me. I did not realize its value then,” he said emotionally.
He also recalled in that post sitting on his grandmother’s lap, holding both her hands, and repeating the Sanskrit verses she recited.
Speaking while paying tribute to Indira Gandhi, Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar said, “Indira Gandhi was an iron lady. She made revolutionary decisions for the progress of the nation and made the whole world turn its attention to India.
She was an unparalleled leader who worked with deep compassion for the advancement of the poor and the underprivileged through the slogan ‘Let us eradicate poverty.’ Her contribution to the history of independent India holds a very important place. Her memories are forever worthy of reverence,” he said.
On Oct. 31, 1984, Indira Gandhi was shot dead by her two bodyguards at her residence in Delhi.
