New Delhi: Three women journalists have complained that they were sexually harassed by Delhi police officers while they had gone to cover the protest held at Jantar Mantar in Delhi against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
The complaint was filed yesterday at the Parliament Street police station. Initially, the Delhi Police was reluctant to register the complaint, but following the backlash that arose across the country, it has handed the complaint over to the crime branch police for a fair investigation.
Affected journalist said, “I was filming the Jantar Mantar protest. There were no women police officers present when the protesters were being arrested. When I questioned Delhi Police Assistant Commissioner Vivek Bhagat about this, he sexually harassed me and pushed me back,” he alleged.
The Indian Press Council and the Press Club of India have strongly condemned this incident. Delhi Deputy Commissioner of Police Neha Yadav said, “Complaints filed by three women have been registered, and they have also undergone medical examinations. Furthermore, the case has been handed over to the Delhi Police’s crime branch for investigation,” she said.
On this issue, Abhijit Dipke of the Bharatiya Janata Party, Neha Bora of the All India Students’ Association, and Lok Sabha Opposition Leader Rahul Gandhi, among others, have strongly criticized the Delhi Police.
