The Student List coalition has won a historic victory in the parliamentary election held in Serbia.
A political movement started by students has brought an end to the political career of Aleksandar Vučić, who had ruled Serbia for the past ten years. On November 1, 2024, the roof of the Novi Sad railway station collapsed, killing 16 people. This incident sparked protests by young people and students, who said government corruption was to blame.
The movement, led by Professor Iliya Srtanovic, emerged as a powerful political platform called the 'Student List'. As pressure from student protests intensified, in September 2026 Vučić resigned from the presidency and announced early parliamentary elections.

In the 250-seat Serbian parliament, the 'Student List' party won a majority by securing 135 to 140 seats. Since Vučić's 'Serbian Progressive Party' won only 105 seats, Vučić formally conceded his defeat. With this, his 12-year political dominance in Serbia has come to an end. Voters turned out in numbers not seen in the past 30 years of parliamentary elections.
This election result is seen not merely as a change in parliamentary seats, but as a powerful blow dealt by the people to the political party that had dominated Serbia for more than the past ten years. What began as a protest on university campuses turned into the voice of the people against allegations of corruption in the government, lack of media freedom, and the government’s irresponsibility. Not only young people, but also the urban middle class and all voters dissatisfied with the current political system have voted in support of the student movement.

This defeat is a major political setback for President Vučić, who has kept Serbian politics under his control for many years through his strong organizational power, media control, and personal political dominance. It is said that his political influence will now decline significantly.
Although it is easy to win an election by making promises, governing the country from now on is the biggest challenge facing the Student List movement. The decisions they are going to make on important issues such as the country’s economy, foreign policy, joining the European Union, the Kosovo issue, the energy sector, and relations with Russia and China will determine their future.
Through this victory, a new generation has emerged in Serbian politics. The public widely expects the new government to bring major changes in judicial independence, anti-corruption efforts, and media freedom. The world is closely watching how the students who have brought about a new change in Serbia are going to lead the country.
