Coimbatore: Due to the heavy rain that has been continuously lashing Coimbatore city and its surrounding areas, water has accumulated on the roads, disrupting traffic. As people struggle to drain rainwater that has entered their homes, Backward Classes Welfare Minister Sampathkumar expressed dissatisfaction to municipal officials, saying, “Not a single day has work been done properly… where did you desilt?”
With the northeast monsoon intensifying, rain has been falling intermittently in various parts of Coimbatore city and district since last Thursday.
In this situation, from Sunday morning itself the intensity of the sun decreased and a cool climate prevailed in the city. In the evening, rain fell widely.
Due to the heavy rain that has been continuously falling in Coimbatore city and its surrounding areas, rainwater has accumulated like flooding in many places. Rainwater is gushing along the roads, and in some areas trees have fallen and caused damage. As a result, people’s normal lives have been affected. In particular, in areas including Sivananda Colony, Sanganoor, and Rathinapuri, rainwater mixed with sewage has entered residential homes, causing severe hardship for the residents of those areas. People are struggling to drain the rainwater that has entered their houses.
Moreover, people expect that drainage facilities should be improved in areas where rainwater has accumulated, and steps should be taken to quickly drain the water.
In this situation, Backward Classes Welfare Minister Sampathkumar personally inspected the areas affected by the rain.
At that time, he questioned the municipal corporation official there about the reason for the rainwater stagnation. Speaking in dissatisfaction to the official, the minister said, "You are not functioning properly. If you look here, everything is still the same. Not even for a single day is work being done properly... In which places did you do the work? Tomorrow, come with the public and show the places where you carried out the work," he said.
He further said that if the rainwater drains had been properly desilted and maintained, such damage would not have occurred, and expressed his dissatisfaction to the official, saying, "If they had been properly desilted, a situation like this would not have arisen."
As heavy rains caused rainwater to enter residential areas and affect people, the minister’s direct questioning of the municipal administration’s stormwater drain maintenance work created a stir in that area.
With the rain continuing, people expect the municipal administration to take swift action to drain the rainwater accumulated in the affected areas, repair the drains, and prevent water from entering homes again.
