Chennai: State Finance Commission Chairman Alauddin has said that the recommendation on financial devolution for local bodies will be submitted to the Tamil Nadu government by December.
A national-level seminar on improving the administration and financial condition of local bodies, organized by the Tamil Nadu government's 7th State Finance Commission and the Chennai Institute of Development Studies, was held yesterday in Arumbakkam.
At the seminar held under the chairmanship of the Commission Chairman K. Alauddin, Municipal Administration Department Secretary Gagandeep Singh Bedi, Rural Development Department Secretary Dharmendra Pratap Yadav, former Director of the National Institute of Public Finance and Policy M. Govinda Rao, former Kerala Chief Secretary S.M. Vijayanand, and others participated and presented their views.
Later, K. Alauddin told reporters: In Tamil Nadu, it has been one year since the 7th State Finance Commission was constituted for local bodies, including municipalities, corporations, and village panchayats.
We are studying three key aspects: how much financial devolution should be provided to local bodies from the state government’s funds, how local bodies can increase their own revenue sources, and how to improve their capacity to deliver services to the public.
In this regard, extensive consultations have been held with officials and people’s representatives in various districts. We are also studying the local governance practices of other states, including Kerala and Karnataka.
As a continuation of this, the recommendations received in the ongoing consultations will also be incorporated, and the draft report will be submitted to the government by December. He said this. Chennai Development Research Institute Director M. Suresh Babu, Commission Joint Secretary V. Anbalagan, and others took part in the event.
